Displaced Maize Field on the 400th Anniversary of Henry Hudson's voyage up the River (full title)
We are growing Gigi Hill Blue Flint Corn and Onondaga Yellow Eye beans both of which are traditional native American crops indigenous to the northeast. Our squash, White Scallop Bush Squash, is native American heirloom grown by Northern Indians for hundreds of years.
Artist Project
This garden is part of a larger work-in-progress by the artist Christina Kelly to plant native, North Eastern varieties of corn in areas of Brooklyn that were historically Native American planting grounds. These areas include what are now parts of Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Boerum Hill, Bensonhurst and Canarsie.
